Wax apple ‘Chompu’ in Thai is a tropical fruit native to the Greater Sunda Islands comprising Java, Sumatra, Borneo, and Sulawesi in southeast Asia.

It grows on trees with nice deep green relatively large leaves. The fruits resemble pears in shape and size and have shiny waxy skin. Cultivars vary in color, from ruby red through pink to white.

The fruit is unrelated to apples. The flavor is subtly sweet with hints of tartness. The pulp is crisp and very succulent, which is what the fruit is liked for. I like Chompu as fresh fruit and in salads.
